Chapter 9: ABIGAIL

Watching a vampire sleep was surreal.

It was not that they turned into some visibly monstrous thing, or that they did superstitious rituals like sleeping in a coffin, or even hanging like a bat from the ceiling.

No, they slept like humans.

Abigail quietly stared at the figure slumbering in the large king bed in the center of the room. He even breathed, though just barely. It was more like a coma patient than a man casually sleeping away the daytime hours, but it still had some semblance of life to it.

She couldn’t let him out of her sight. Not for a moment.

But she did need to rest too. While she was the furthest thing from a human, she did need to recuperate in a similar way. Rather than sleep, it was more akin to allowing her divine spark to settle into an ember of itself.

And it did not demand that she make herself comfortable, either. She did afford herself some comfort though, opting to lower herself to sit on the floor with her back to the door.

In the silence, the dust settled, and she could not help but feel tension in her chest and pressure in her head. The past few days had been tumultuous at best.

As deeply as she held her convictions, this semblance of privacy left her with nothing but her own thoughts, without danger or conflict to drive her onward. And once again, whispering like smoke through cracks, there came the doubts that she was doing the right thing after all.

She was already defying protocol in seeking out Vincent Moreau on her own. Even when she brought him in for judgment, or informed the Order that she had carried out justice herself, who was to say that they would commend her for it?

Why hadn’t they authorized angels to move against him, anyway?

That particular frustration had stewed in her mind ceaselessly.

If she really wanted to, she could get up right now and burn his sleeping form. Or at least weaken him significantly for the ensuing fight to come and get out of here before his soldiers could destroy her in turn.

But it wasn’t about ending Vincent Moreau. It was about ending the suffering of humans and restoring balance to this world under the eyes of Heaven.

And, as reluctant as she was to admit it, he had been doing more for helping humans than most of her kind were. Directly, anyway. Of course, the Order and its manifold angels moved in subtle concert to carry out the will of God. Such was the insistence she had heard, over and over again.

And for a long time, she did believe that in full earnest.

It was harder to see that now.

And that wasn’t her only worry. Ever since she had crossed paths with him, there was a sense of wrongness at the thought of being parted from him. Was it just his demonic influence corrupting her thoughts? Or did she just regard him as necessary for helping to protect humanity?
